Central Agency Issues Fresh Summons in Karur Stampede Case
CHENNAI — India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued a fresh summons to actor-turned-politician Vijay as part of its investigation into the Karur stampede incident, officials confirmed.
The summons relates to the ongoing probe into a stampede that occurred in Karur district in Tamil Nadu, where large crowds had gathered during a public event linked to Vijay’s political activities.
According to investigators, the CBI has asked Vijay to appear for questioning regarding the circumstances surrounding the gathering and the arrangements made for crowd management.
TVK Chief Requests Additional Time
Following the summons, Vijay—who leads the political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)—has requested 10 days’ time before appearing before investigators.
Sources familiar with the matter said the request was made through legal representatives, who cited prior commitments and scheduling issues.
The CBI is reviewing the request and is expected to decide whether to grant the additional time for questioning.
Officials have not indicated whether failure to appear within the required timeframe could result in further legal action.
Investigation Focuses on Crowd Management
The Karur stampede occurred during a large gathering where thousands of supporters had assembled. Authorities said overcrowding and inadequate crowd-control measures may have contributed to the incident.

Vijay announced the formation of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam earlier as part of his entry into politics, positioning the party to participate in upcoming elections in the state.
