At least 17 people were killed after a drone strike hit a school building being used as a shelter for displaced civilians in Sudan, according to local authorities and medical officials.
The strike occurred amid the continuing conflict between Sudan’s military and paramilitary forces, which has devastated large parts of the country since fighting erupted in April 2023. Officials said the school had been housing families who had fled nearby combat zones.
Emergency responders reported that many of the victims were civilians who had sought refuge inside the school building when the drone strike occurred.
Attack on Civilian Shelter
Local health officials said rescue teams pulled bodies and injured survivors from the rubble following the explosion. Several people were reported wounded, and hospitals in the surrounding area were treating victims.
Witnesses described a powerful blast that destroyed parts of the school structure and scattered debris across nearby streets. Residents reported that the building had been used for months as a temporary refuge for displaced families.
Authorities said the exact circumstances of the strike remain under investigation.
Sudan’s Ongoing Civil Conflict
Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal power struggle between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict has caused widespread destruction across cities and towns, including the capital Khartoum.
Humanitarian organizations report that millions of people have been displaced and large areas of the country face severe shortages of food, medicine, and clean water.
The United Nations and international aid groups have repeatedly warned about attacks on civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and residential areas.
International Concern Over Civilian Casualties
International organizations have called for greater protection of civilians and an immediate cessation of attacks on facilities being used as shelters.
Humanitarian agencies say the war has created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with millions of Sudanese facing displacement and insecurity.
Diplomatic efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire have so far failed, and clashes between rival forces continue across several regions of the country.
Officials warned that the humanitarian situation could deteriorate further if fighting intensifies in the coming months.
