Suspect Identified by Authorities
The armed man who was shot and killed by members of the United States Secret Service outside President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, has been identified by authorities as a 21-year-old from North Carolina.
Law enforcement officials confirmed Sunday that the deceased was Austin Tucker Martin, 21, of Cameron, North Carolina. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred in the early morning hours when the individual breached the secure perimeter of the resort while carrying what appeared to be a shotgun.
Officials stated that President Donald Trump was not present at the property at the time of the incident.
Incident Details
According to a joint briefing by the Secret Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. on February 22, 2026. Authorities said the suspect entered a restricted area near the north gate of the property by following another vehicle through an access point.
Officers reportedly issued repeated verbal commands instructing the individual to drop his weapon. Law enforcement officials stated that while the suspect complied with dropping a fuel container he was carrying, he then raised the firearm in what officers described as a threatening posture. At that point, Secret Service agents and a sheriff’s deputy discharged their weapons.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement personnel were reported injured.
FBI Leads Investigation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead in investigating the shooting, standard protocol when federal agents discharge their firearms. The FBI’s Miami Field Office confirmed it is reviewing body camera footage, forensic evidence, and witness statements.
Officials have not publicly disclosed a motive. Authorities indicated that the suspect had been reported missing by family members prior to the incident, though details regarding the missing person report have not been elaborated.
Investigators are also examining how the suspect gained access to the secure perimeter and whether any security protocols were breached.
Security at Mar-a-Lago
Mar-a-Lago, located in Palm Beach, serves as a private club and residence owned by President Donald Trump. The property is frequently protected by the Secret Service, particularly when the President is present.
Security perimeters typically include vehicle checkpoints, restricted access zones, and coordinated patrols with local law enforcement. Officials stated that protective measures functioned as designed in this case, preventing the suspect from advancing further onto the property.
The Department of Homeland Security has not announced any additional security adjustments following the incident.
Official Statements
In a statement, the Secret Service said its personnel “responded to an armed threat in accordance with established use-of-force policy.” The agency reiterated that deadly force is authorized only when an imminent threat of serious bodily harm or death is present.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that its deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure pending review.
As of Sunday evening, President Donald Trump had not issued a public statement regarding the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further updates will be provided once preliminary findings are completed.
