Gulf Region — U.S. allies across the Persian Gulf have borne the brunt of Iranian retaliatory missile and drone strikes in the wake of a major U.S.–Israeli military offensive against Iran that began February 28, 2026. The escalation has tested regional defence systems and exposed Gulf monarchies — historically partners of Washington but not direct participants in the conflict — to hostile fire and mounting security dilemmas.

According to defence officials and local governments, Iran launched waves of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles at military installations and urban centres in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman over the past 48 hours. Gulf states host key U.S. military facilities and much of the American strategic footprint in the Middle East. The intensity of the strikes has disrupted civilian infrastructure, forced airspace closures, and drawn international condemnation.

Missile and Drone Barrages Across Gulf States

Several Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states reported intercepting dozens of incoming Iranian missiles and drones using advanced air defence systems, including Patriot and other surface-to-air batteries. Despite successful interceptions, explosions and debris caused casualties and physical damage in multiple cities.

In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, at least one person was killed and 11 others injured when an Iranian strike hit airport facilities, leading to extensive flight cancellations and emergency declarations. Authorities also reported fires at hotels and port facilities following intercept fragmentation and direct impacts.

In Bahrain, Iranian missiles and drones targeted areas near the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters, prompting air-raid sirens in Manama and heightened alert levels. Videos shared by local media showed smoke rising over urban districts as civil defence units responded to blast sites.

Kuwait’s main international airport was damaged, according to government statements, and fighters engaged incoming aerial threats. Qatar also reported intercepting hostile projectiles near Al Udeid Air Base, a critical hub for U.S. and coalition operations.

Gulf Governments Condemn Attacks and Call for Security

Gulf governments have condemned the Iranian strikes as breaches of sovereignty and threats to regional stability. Saudi Arabia summoned Iran’s ambassador after ballistic attacks were detected near Saudi territory, stating Riyadh “will take all necessary measures” to defend its airspace and populace.

The UAE described the assaults on its airports and infrastructure as “unacceptable aggression,” with officials stressing that civilian hubs should not be conflated with military targets. GCC foreign ministries released a joint statement urging restraint and reiterating that member states seek stability and diplomacy, not escalation.

Oman — which had served as a mediator in earlier U.S.–Iran talks — also reported indirect effects from the hostilities, including the injury of civilian mariners after a vessel near the Strait of Hormuz was struck amid the barrage.

Impact on U.S. Forces and Regional Security

Iranian strikes have also directly targeted U.S. military assets in the Gulf, complicating the security environment for American personnel stationed in the region. Although Washington’s military infrastructure remains largely defensively resilient, the attacks underscore the risk of prolonged confrontation drawing in partner states and stretching regional air defence capabilities.

The United States Fifth Fleet headquartered in Bahrain reported intercepting multiple missiles and drones over the weekend, while U.S. Central Command acknowledged heightened readiness across allied bases. Congressional leaders and Pentagon officials have emphasised the imperative of protecting forces as the conflict unfolds.

Civilian and Economic Disruptions

Beyond the immediate military implications, Iran’s strikes have had broader socioeconomic effects. Major airports in the UAE and Kuwait experienced closures or limited operations that disrupted international travel and cargo flows. Port facilities critical to Gulf trade were damaged, contributing to concerns about supply chain stability and energy markets already volatile due to the conflict.

Local populations in major cities including Dubai, Doha, Manama and Riyadh faced curfews and emergency protocols as authorities balanced civil protection with defense priorities. Gulf state media outlets reported heightened public anxiety as sirens and alerts persisted.

Regional and International Response

International actors have responded with calls for de-escalation and respect for national sovereignty. China urged an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomacy after condemning the strikes, while global human rights organisations stressed the need to avoid civilian harm amid the broader U.S.–Iran confrontation.

European and United Nations representatives reiterated the urgency of halting hostilities and resuming negotiations to prevent further regional spillover, particularly as the conflict’s trajectory remains uncertain.

Conclusion

The wave of Iranian missile and drone attacks on Gulf states allied with the United States underscores the rapid escalation of the Middle East conflict following the U.S.–Israeli strike campaign against Iran. As Gulf monarchies contend with direct blows to infrastructure and security, the broader implications for regional stability, international trade and diplomatic efforts to contain the war remain at the forefront of global concern.
