The Karnataka government has said it will make alternative housing arrangements for families evicted from Kogilu Layout in Bengaluru, following growing criticism over the displacement of residents during a recent eviction drive.

Senior government officials said on Monday that steps are being taken to ensure affected families are provided temporary shelter and essential facilities, while longer-term rehabilitation measures are worked out. The assurance comes amid protests by residents and appeals from civil society groups urging the government to prevent families—many of them daily-wage workers—from being left homeless.

Eviction Triggers Political and Social Pushback

The eviction at Kogilu Layout was carried out as part of an enforcement drive against what authorities described as unauthorized constructions on government land. Bulldozers moved in earlier this week, demolishing homes and structures, leaving several families without shelter.

Residents said they had lived in the area for years and claimed they had applied for regularisation or possessed documents showing long-term occupancy. Many families alleged they were not given adequate notice or time to relocate.

“We are not against development,” said one evicted resident. “But where are we supposed to go with our children?”

Government Assurance on Rehabilitation

Responding to the backlash, Karnataka officials said the government is committed to ensuring no family is left on the streets.

“Arrangements will be made to house the evicted families,” a senior official said. “Temporary shelters with basic amenities will be provided, and eligible families will be considered for rehabilitation under government housing schemes.”

Officials said district authorities have been instructed to survey the affected families, assess eligibility, and coordinate with urban development and social welfare departments.

Relief Measures Under Consideration

According to sources, the government is considering a combination of immediate and medium-term measures, including:

  • Temporary accommodation in government-run shelters or community halls

  • Provision of food, drinking water, and sanitation facilities

  • Identification of eligible families for permanent housing under state schemes

Local officials said the process would be carried out in phases to avoid further hardship.

Opposition and Activist Response

Opposition parties accused the government of acting without empathy and demanded a halt to evictions until proper rehabilitation plans are in place. Several activists visited the site, calling the action “inhumane” and warning of legal challenges.

“Eviction without rehabilitation violates basic human dignity,” said a housing rights activist. “The government must prioritise people over land disputes.”

Balancing Development and Human Cost

Urban experts say Bengaluru’s rapid expansion has intensified conflicts over land use, with eviction drives increasingly affecting low-income communities living on disputed or unregularised land.

“The challenge is balancing urban planning with social justice,” said an urban policy analyst. “Evictions may be legally justified, but rehabilitation must not be an afterthought.”

As authorities move to implement housing arrangements for the displaced families, residents say their immediate concern is shelter and stability. Many remain camped near the demolished sites, waiting for concrete action beyond assurances.

The government has said further details on housing arrangements will be announced soon.
