The Green Bay Packers have lost two straight games and are struggling on offense, but a trip to play the New York Giants could provide an opportunity at a “get right game,” considering the Giants are 2-8, just fired their head coach, will be starting Jameis Winston at quarterback and have a lengthy injury report featuring several key players.
But nothing can be assumed when the untrustworthy Packers are involved, and all the chaos around this matchup — including the coaching change an now an end of week injury to kicker Brandon McManus — only adds to the intrigue of this matchup between a struggling contender and a sunk team headed for another transition.
Here’s how the staff at Packers Wire believes the Week 11 showdown with the Giants will go down:
Zach Kruse: Packers 31, Giants 13 (6-2-1)
There is a fascinating element of potential chaos in this matchup, given how poorly the Packers have played on offense over the last two weeks and the big changes in New York, specifically at coach and quarterback. What will Mike Kafka and Jameis Winston have cooked up for the struggling Packers? Probably not much. The Giants will be without starting quarterback Jaxson Dart, rookie running back Cam Skattebo, Pro Bowl receiver Malik Nabers and kicker Graham Gano, and receiver Darius Slayton, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, linebacker Bobby Okereke and safety Tyler Nubin haven’t practiced this week. Kafka’s team is also in the running for the worst run defense in football, and you can safely bet Winston — given his track record — will let it rip a few times down the field. This should be a game where the Packers rush for 180 yards, generate 3-4 takeaways and win comfortably. But nothing is a given for this team right now and the Giants present an “unknown” factor. The Packers are desperate for a win and need to play like it Sunday against a struggling, hurting team.
Brandon Carwile: Packers 21, Giants 10 (6-2-1)
The Packers should get back in the win column this week after two disappointing losses. While the Giants have a deep group of pass rushers, their run defense is ranked 31st, which means Matt LaFleur’s run-heavy approach with Josh Jacobs should have success. With Jaxson Dart out, New York is turning to third-stringer Jameis Winston on Sunday, so I’m expecting the defense to come away with at least one interception. Green Bay’s offense may not put up a ton of points, but a takeaway or two while controlling the game on the ground should be enough. The Giants have lost four in a row and are in the midst of a lost season following the firing of their head coach. (edited)
Mark Oldacres: Packers 23, Giants 10 (6-2-1)
There is not much to foster belief the Giants are going to put up points on the Packers defense barring Jameis Winston’s habitual chaos swinging their way, but the real question is whether Green Bay can get right on offense. They should look more functional on the ground against arguably the worst run defense in the NFL and do enough to not make this one a nail biter, but a true offensive breakout would be a surprise at this point given how Matt LaFleur’s group have looked in recent games, with Tucker Kraft’s absence hitting them hard.
Brennen Rupp: Packers 20, Giants 6 (6-2-1)
Can the Packers offense start building momentum after a rough two games? If they can’t get things going against this defense, they may be a tough watch the rest of the season. If they can score 20 points, they’ll win this game to improve to 6-3-1. I expect Jameis Winston to throw a few picks and the defense to make enough splash plays to help the offense out.
