Head coach Sean McDermott had some telling comments on several topics surrounding the Bills this week.
And the newly available coach Brian Daboll was one of them.
Some of the biggest Bills news of the week didn’t involve the team, but their former offensive coordinator, who was relieved of head coaching duties by the Giants in New Jersey.
Could the Bills welcome him back to New York?
Daboll was the most successful offensive coordinator pairing with a quarterback since Hall of Fame franchise legend Jim Kelly led the team to four consecutive Super Bowls. The coach and Bills QB Josh Allen have a special relationship and a historical track record of success together.
Bills coach Sean McDermott said his current offensive coordinator, Joe Brady, has the team’s full confidence.
“Joe’s a good coach. He really is. We’ve got a really good offensive staff. They’ve had really good games. You’re going to have some games you want back, some play calls you want back,” McDermott said. “It’s how you respond to them, and I’m fully confident in our offensive staff — and Joe as our leader — that we will make the adjustments we need to make and move us forward.”
Brady is good as an OC. But Daboll is great.
“Yeah, no, I understand why you’re asking that. Brian’s a great coach,” McDermott replied when being asked directly about the opportunity to bring back the best OC he’s had. “Unfortunate to see that happen to him. At this point, that’s not under any type of consideration.”
After the Bills’ win against the Carolina Panthers two weeks ago, McDermott called for improvement in the passing game, while Brady expressed “zero concerns.” After losing to the Dolphins, Brady instead said, “I’m not going to point the fingers at anybody else. When we have that type of performance, it falls solely on me”.
While McDermott is correct in that Brady’s job should be safe as OC, it would be illogical for the front office and coaching staff not to immediately explore a reunion with Daboll as a senior offensive assistant to do everything they can to win, even for the remainder of the season, as the two sides offer one another the best opportunity for success.
It would also be illogical not to do so for Allen, and would be generally viewed as a failure to do what they can to improve the team and its play during his prime and their Super Bowl window.
After failed attempts to upgrade the passing game on the field at the trade deadline, the opportunity to upgrade it on the field (and the offense overall) is now in front of GM Brandon Beane and ownership with Daboll available.
