The upcoming offseason is not on Chargers fans’ minds, as the team is in good shape with a 7-3 record and on pace for a playoff spot.
However, there’s nothing wrong with looking ahead to what the future of the roster could look like, and one of the key storylines is what happens with edge rusher Khalil Mack, who is set to be a free agent after the season.
ESPN recently built out its list of the best 25 available free agents, and Mack was included, checking in at No. 17.
Age will cap Mack’s earning power, but he’s playing well enough to score another high-end one-year deal with Los Angeles or elsewhere, after pumping out four sacks in six games. Here’s to guessing the Chargers’ brass attempts to keep him, depending how the season plays out. Either way, he’ll have a market.
Mack is 34 and will be 35 next season, but he’s still playing at a high level. After returning from an elbow injury in Week 7, Mack has three sacks (four in six games) and two forced fumbles.
The Chargers will likely look to bring Mack back on another high-priced one-year deal. Since trading for him in 2022, the veteran has been a key piece of the defense and he’s made it clear that he wants to pursue a Super Bowl with the Bolts.
The Chargers had another player who didn’t make the top 25 but landed on the honorable mention list, with that being Odafe Oweh.
Oweh, who was acquired via trade with the Ravens, has been a productive pass rusher for the Bolts. After not recording a single sack in the first five games in Baltimore, Oweh has recorded four sacks in four games with the Chargers.
If Oweh continues to keep up this level of production, he should be in a position to garner some attention from other teams this offseason.
