A fierce political row has erupted in Delhi as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) challenged Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and BJP MP Parvesh Verma to publicly drink a litre of Yamuna river water, following the BJP-led government’s claims that the river has been cleaned ahead of the Chhath Puja festival.

AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj threw down the gauntlet, saying,

“If Rekha Gupta says that the water in the Yamuna is clean, then I ask Rekha Gupta and Parvesh Verma to come with me and drink a litre of Yamuna water”.

The challenge came after CM Gupta asserted that the Yamuna would be “froth-free” for Chhath Puja, citing the use of eco-friendly de-foaming agents. However, AAP accused the BJP of hypocrisy, pointing out that the same chemicals were previously labeled as “poison” by BJP leaders when used by the former AAP government.

Bharadwaj further criticized the BJP for focusing on optics rather than real solutions, stating that the government had not signed any agreement with Haryana to stop polluted water from entering Delhi via the Najafgarh drain. He argued that spraying chemicals only reduces visible foam, not actual contamination.

The BJP hit back, accusing AAP of wasting over ₹6,500 crore on failed Yamuna clean-up projects during its tenure, and claimed the current administration is taking more effective and transparent steps.

As Delhi prepares for Chhath Puja amid hazardous air quality and river pollution, the Yamuna has once again become a flashpoint in the capital’s political battle.
