Buccaneers’ Kameron Johnson named NFC Special Team Player of the Week

·

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a slightly controversial decision in their initial depth chart when they had wide receiver Kameron Johnson listed as the top return man over rookie Tez Johnson. When the Bucs spent a draft pick on Johnson, most had assumed it was for him to be their top return man. However, Johnson had earned the role in camp, and in Week 1, he showed why.

After Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, Kameron Johnson was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Johnson played 12 snaps on special teams this past Sunday, which included one punt return, which he took back 54 yards to set up the Bucs offense. He also played the gunner role on the coverage team to help Riley Dixon in his team debut as the Bucs’ new punter. His 54-yard return was the longest in franchise history since Bobby Rainey’s 58-yard return in 2015.

It is worth noting that Johnson is also the first Bucs player to win NFC Special Teams Player of the Week since punter Jake Camarda in 2023.
