A former Air Canada pilot has been arrested and charged after Canadian investigators alleged he operated commercial flights for nearly two decades without holding the legally required airline captain’s licence.
Geoffrey Wall, a 59-year-old resident of Barrie, Ontario, faces multiple criminal charges following an investigation by the Peel Regional Police in Ontario known as “Project Icarus.”
Authorities allege Wall captained more than 900 domestic and international commercial flights over 17 years despite never obtaining the mandatory Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), which is legally required to serve as pilot-in-command on large commercial aircraft. (cbc.ca)
Investigation Began After Qualification Review
According to Peel Regional Police, Wall joined Air Canada in 1998 and was promoted to captain in 2009. Investigators claim he submitted forged documents falsely indicating he had passed the written examinations required for the ATPL certification process. (cp24.com)
The discrepancy was reportedly discovered during a routine qualification review conducted by Transport Canada. Air Canada immediately removed Wall from active duty and voluntarily reported the matter to federal aviation authorities.
Police allege Wall later attempted to conceal the issue by filing a false police report claiming that critical licensing paperwork had been lost or stolen. (globalnews.ca)
Authorities subsequently launched Project Icarus, a complex fraud investigation examining licensing records, training history, and airline documentation.
Pilot Allegedly Operated Hundreds of Long-Haul Flights
Investigators said Wall flew several major wide-body aircraft during his career, including:
- Boeing 767
- Boeing 777
- Boeing 787 Dreamliner
Police estimate he captained hundreds of flights carrying tens of thousands of passengers across North America, Europe, Asia, and other international destinations. (cbc.ca)
Despite the allegations, Air Canada stressed that passenger safety was never compromised.
In an official statement, the airline said Wall held a valid commercial pilot licence and successfully completed mandatory airline simulator evaluations, medical checks, recurrent training, and operational competency assessments every six months. The company stated the issue involved the absence of the higher-level ATPL certification specifically required for captain status. (ctvnews.ca)
Criminal Charges Filed
Peel Regional Police confirmed Wall now faces several criminal charges, including:
- Fraud over $5,000
- Uttering forged documents
- Public mischief
Police said additional charges remain possible as investigators continue reviewing records linked to his employment history and certification process. (peelpolice.ca)
Aviation Experts Highlight Regulatory Questions
The case has raised broader questions regarding aviation oversight and pilot credential verification within the commercial airline industry.
Aviation experts told Canadian media that airlines and regulators typically maintain extensive checks involving pilot licences, recurrent training, simulator evaluations, medical examinations, and flight hour documentation. Some analysts described the allegations as highly unusual given the multiple layers of certification normally required for airline captains. (theglobeandmail.com)
Transport Canada said it is cooperating fully with investigators and reviewing internal oversight procedures related to licence verification.
At the time of publication, Wall’s legal representatives had not publicly commented on the allegations.
