Authorities in California concluded a multi-day search operation Saturday for the remains of Kristin Smart without making a recovery, despite investigators identifying scientific evidence consistent with possible human decomposition at the property.
The search, conducted by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, focused on a residence in Arroyo Grande owned by Susan Flores, the mother of convicted murderer Paul Flores.
Investigators executed a search warrant at the property on May 6 as part of the continuing effort to locate Smart’s remains nearly three decades after her disappearance.
Investigators Detected Signs Consistent With Human Decomposition
During a press briefing Friday, Sheriff Ian Parkinson stated that advanced soil analysis and ground-penetrating radar detected anomalies and chemical compounds consistent with human decomposition.
The findings raised renewed hopes that investigators may have located evidence connected to Smart’s burial site.
However, officials confirmed Saturday that the operation ended without recovering human remains.
The Sheriff’s Office stated that while the search did not locate Kristin Smart, investigators continue to believe the property may hold evidentiary value connected to the long-running homicide investigation.
Electronic Devices and Documents Seized
Authorities said detectives removed multiple items from the property during the search operation, including electronic devices, documents, and other materials that may assist investigators.
Those items are now undergoing forensic examination.
Officials said investigators will continue analyzing the evidence to determine whether it provides additional information regarding the possible movement or concealment of Smart’s remains.
Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly stated that locating Smart’s remains remains a central priority in the case.
Longstanding Theory About Movement of Remains
Kristin Smart disappeared in May 1996 while attending California Polytechnic State University, commonly known as Cal Poly.
She was 19 years old at the time and was last seen after attending an off-campus party near the university.
In 2002, Smart was declared legally dead.
Prosecutors later alleged that Paul Flores murdered Smart during or after the night she disappeared. In 2022, Flores was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to prison.
Authorities have long believed Smart’s remains were initially buried beneath a deck at the home of Paul Flores’ father, Ruben Flores, before being moved sometime afterward.
Earlier forensic investigations reportedly uncovered soil evidence beneath the deck consistent with decomposition and burial disturbance.
Susan Flores Remains Person of Interest
Sheriff Parkinson reiterated during recent updates that Susan Flores continues to be considered a person of interest in the investigation.
Officials stated she could potentially face criminal liability as an accessory if investigators establish direct evidence linking her to efforts to conceal or move Smart’s remains.
No new criminal charges related to the case have been announced.
The Kristin Smart investigation remains one of California’s most widely followed unresolved disappearance and homicide cases.
Family and Public Continue Seeking Closure
For decades, Smart’s family and supporters have sought answers regarding the location of her remains.
The case drew national attention due to the lengthy investigation, repeated searches, and eventual murder conviction despite the absence of a recovered body.
Authorities indicated that additional investigative steps remain possible as forensic testing and evidence review continue in the coming weeks.
