While it doesn’t have the buildup or excitement of playing Ohio State to open the season, Texas’ contest against San Jose is very important for the Longhorns season. The play of the offense, particularly quarterback Arch Manning, was shocking and must improve for the Longhorns to reach any season goals this year.
SJSU starts a string of three games in a row that the Longhorns will be heavy favorites. Texas is a 36.5 point favorite this week against the Spartans. The Horns need to act like it.
You can’t always tell a whole lot about the quality of a Texas team against non-conference cupcakes. Good teams or bad, UT usually blows them out. It is telling however if the Horns struggle to put these teams away.
For mental confidence, the Longhorns offense needs to have a big day against SJSU. Manning needs to come out of whatever mechanical funk he was in last week. He’s gotten a good taste of the pressure. It’s time for him to get going.

Texas vs. San Jose State Prediction
Let’s start on the defensive side of the ball. The Longhorns defense did an admirable job on Ohio State last week. You could see the makings of an elite defense. The Spartans will have a hard time scoring any points on Saturday.
As for the offense. Don’t expect it to be miraculously fixed just because the opponent is inferior to last week. Arch Manning’s mechanical problems will take some time to iron out, if they can be. But the quality of opponent will give Manning and the offense a sandbox to figure things out in.
Final Score: Texas 34, San Jose State 0
