New Delhi | April 5, 2026 — Large parts of India are bracing for a significant change in weather conditions as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms beginning Sunday, impacting multiple states across north, east, and central regions.
Widespread Alerts Across 18 States
According to IMD forecasts, at least 18 states are expected to experience unstable weather conditions, including gusty winds and thunderstorms. Regions likely to be affected include Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and parts of central and eastern India.
Authorities have issued orange and yellow alerts in several districts, indicating the potential for severe thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and localized hailstorms. In Uttar Pradesh alone, alerts have been issued across 35 districts, including Lucknow and Gorakhpur.
Western Disturbance Driving Weather Shift
Meteorologists attribute the sudden weather activity to an active western disturbance, combined with moisture inflow and rising surface temperatures. This combination is creating atmospheric instability, a key trigger for thunderstorms and hail events.
Experts note that such systems are common during the pre-monsoon period but can intensify rapidly, leading to short-duration yet high-impact weather events.
Impact: Relief from Heat, But Risk to Crops
While the incoming rainfall is expected to bring temporary relief from rising temperatures, it also poses risks:
- Crop damage due to hailstorms and strong winds
- Falling trees and infrastructure disruption in urban areas
- Increased risk of lightning-related incidents
Reports indicate that some regions have already witnessed uprooted trees and agricultural losses, raising concerns among farmers.
Regional Forecast Highlights
- North India: Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds likely through early next week
- Eastern India (including Bihar): Rainfall with thunder activity expected to persist for several days
- Punjab & Haryana: Continued drizzle and storm activity leading to fluctuating temperatures
- West Bengal: Thunderstorms expected to bring relief from heatwave conditions
Public Advisory Issued
The IMD has advised residents to take precautions, including:
- Avoiding open areas during lightning activity
- Securing loose outdoor objects
- Staying updated with local weather alerts
- Farmers advised to protect standing crops where possible
Outlook for Coming Days
The current weather pattern is expected to continue until at least April 7–8, with intermittent spells of rain and storms across several regions.
Meteorologists indicate that while temperatures may dip temporarily, heat conditions could return once the system weakens, typical of early April weather trends in India.
