Chennai | April 5, 2026 — Thol Thirumavalavan, leader of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), has announced that he will not contest the upcoming elections, stating that the decision is aimed at preserving the unity and strength of the alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Decision Aimed at Strengthening Alliance

In a statement issued on Saturday, Thirumavalavan clarified that his decision was strategic rather than political withdrawal, emphasizing that maintaining cohesion within the DMK-led alliance remains a priority.

He said that contesting the elections could potentially create unnecessary complications in seat-sharing arrangements, and stepping aside would allow smoother coordination among alliance partners.

Focus on Collective Political Strategy

The VCK chief reiterated that his party remains firmly committed to the alliance and will continue to actively campaign and support DMK candidates and other allies across Tamil Nadu.

Political observers note that Thirumavalavan has played a crucial role in consolidating Dalit support and social justice narratives within the alliance, making his continued presence in campaign strategy significant even without contesting a seat.

DMK Alliance Dynamics in Tamil Nadu

The DMK-led alliance, headed by M. K. Stalin, includes several regional and national parties and is considered one of the strongest political coalitions in the state.

Seat-sharing negotiations have been ongoing, with alliance partners balancing regional influence, caste dynamics, and electoral arithmetic ahead of the polls.

Thirumavalavan’s move is being seen as an effort to avoid friction among allies, particularly in constituencies where multiple parties have overlapping support bases.

Political Reactions

Leaders within the DMK alliance have welcomed the decision, calling it a “mature and selfless political move” that prioritizes collective success over individual ambitions.

However, opposition parties have criticized the move, alleging that it reflects internal pressures within the alliance, though no official evidence has been presented to support these claims.

No Change in VCK’s Political Role

Despite opting out of contesting, Thirumavalavan confirmed that the VCK will actively participate in the elections, field candidates in allocated constituencies, and remain engaged in alliance strategy discussions.

He also indicated that his focus will be on campaigning, mobilizing voters, and ensuring the alliance’s electoral success, particularly among marginalized communities.

Outlook Ahead of Elections

With the elections approaching, the DMK-led alliance is expected to finalize seat-sharing arrangements in the coming days. Analysts suggest that decisions like Thirumavalavan’s could help streamline negotiations and present a united front to voters.

There has been no official announcement yet regarding the final distribution of seats among alliance partners.
