Complaint Filed Over Alleged Racial Slurs

Two women from Arunachal Pradesh have alleged that they were subjected to racial abuse in North Delhi, including a derogatory remark questioning whether they were “running a massage parlour.” The alleged incident occurred in the Mukherjee Nagar area, according to a complaint filed with Delhi Police.

Police officials confirmed that a formal complaint has been received and that an investigation has been initiated. Authorities stated that statements from the complainants have been recorded. At the time of publication, officials have not disclosed the exact date and time of the alleged incident, nor have they publicly identified the accused individuals.

The women, both residents of Arunachal Pradesh currently living in Delhi for work and study, alleged that the remarks were made during an altercation with local residents. They stated that the comments targeted their ethnicity and appearance.

Police officials from North Delhi district said that preliminary inquiries are underway. According to an official statement, officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area and verifying witness accounts.

A senior police officer stated that appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code related to intentional insult and acts promoting enmity may be invoked if the allegations are substantiated. However, authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that no arrests have been announced so far.

The officer further urged the public to refrain from speculation and to allow the legal process to proceed based on verified evidence.

The alleged remarks have reignited discussions about discrimination faced by individuals from India’s northeastern states in metropolitan cities. Advocacy groups representing northeastern communities have previously raised concerns about stereotyping and racial slurs directed at residents from the region.

Community representatives in Delhi said they are closely monitoring the case. One local organization supporting northeastern residents stated that it would extend legal assistance if required. The group reiterated that racial profiling and derogatory comments based on physical features or regional background remain serious concerns.

Officials from Arunachal Pradesh have not yet issued a formal statement regarding the complaint. It remains unclear whether the state government has sought a report from Delhi authorities.

Legal and Policy Context

Indian law provides protections against acts of discrimination and intentional insult intended to provoke breach of peace. Legal experts note that if racial intent is established, charges may also involve provisions under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, depending on the specific circumstances and identities involved. Police have not confirmed whether any such provisions are being considered in this case.

In previous incidents involving alleged racial abuse in Delhi and other major cities, authorities have conducted awareness drives and issued public advisories promoting inclusivity and respect for diversity. However, official data on the frequency of such complaints is limited.

The National Commission for Women has not released a statement regarding the present matter. It is not immediately known whether the complainants have approached the commission separately.

Official Appeal for Calm

Delhi Police have urged citizens to avoid circulating unverified claims on social media. In their statement, officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring safety for all residents, regardless of regional background.

As of Sunday evening, the investigation remains active. Authorities have indicated that further details will be shared once initial findings are verified.
