Authorities in Tamil Nadu have detained six individuals on charges of allegedly plotting a terror attack within India, with investigators probing suspected links to Pakistan’s intelligence agency and operatives based in Bangladesh. The arrests were carried out in coordinated raids across Chennai and adjoining districts, according to senior officials in the Tamil Nadu Police.

Police sources confirmed that the detentions were made following intelligence inputs received earlier this month. The suspects are currently being interrogated, and digital devices, documents, and communication records have been seized for forensic analysis. Officials stated that the case may be transferred to the National Investigation Agency if cross-border links are formally established.

The arrests took place in Chennai and nearby suburban areas during early morning operations conducted by specialized counter-terror units. Police officials indicated that the raids were based on “credible intelligence” suggesting preparations for a coordinated attack targeting public infrastructure.

While authorities have not disclosed specific targets, they confirmed that surveillance had been underway for several weeks. According to investigators, encrypted messaging platforms and suspected foreign contacts were identified during the monitoring phase.

A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity as the investigation is ongoing, said preliminary evidence points to attempts to establish contact with handlers allegedly linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). However, officials stressed that the international links are still under verification and that no formal diplomatic communication has yet been issued.

Suspected Cross-Border Connections

Investigators are also examining possible facilitation networks operating out of Bangladesh. Intelligence officials believe the suspects may have received logistical or financial assistance routed through intermediaries outside India.

Authorities have not publicly identified the six detainees, citing operational sensitivity. Police confirmed that the suspects are Indian nationals and that background checks are being conducted to determine whether they had previous criminal records or affiliations with banned organizations.

Security agencies are also reviewing financial transactions and travel histories. According to police sources, certain digital trails indicate attempts to procure materials that could potentially be used for disruptive activities. However, officials have not confirmed the recovery of explosives or weapons at this stage.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

The six individuals have been booked under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. They were produced before a local court in Chennai and remanded to police custody for further interrogation.

Officials stated that forensic examination of seized electronic devices is ongoing, and any confirmed evidence of foreign coordination will be formally documented in court filings. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains in its preliminary phase and that conclusions regarding external involvement will only be drawn after forensic and intelligence validation.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has been briefed on the developments. Senior officials in New Delhi are monitoring the situation closely, given the potential implications for national security.

Heightened Security Measures

Following the arrests, security has been intensified at key installations across Chennai, including transport hubs, government buildings, and major public venues. Additional police deployments have been ordered as a precautionary measure.

Counter-terror experts note that Tamil Nadu has remained largely stable in recent years, with isolated cases of radicalization addressed through coordinated intelligence operations. Officials reiterated that swift preventive action likely averted a potential threat.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant but calm. Police have requested citizens to report suspicious activities through official helplines.

Official Statement

In a brief press interaction, a spokesperson for Tamil Nadu Police confirmed: “Six persons have been detained based on actionable intelligence regarding a possible terror conspiracy. Investigation is ongoing. We are examining all angles, including potential international connections.”

No official statement has yet been issued by the governments of Pakistan or Bangladesh regarding the allegations.

Investigations continue, and further details are expected following forensic analysis and custodial interrogation.
