Pentagon Releases First Detailed Casualty Figures
The Pentagon has confirmed that about 140 United States service members have been wounded since the start of the war with Iran, with eight troops suffering severe injuries, according to an official update released March 10, 2026.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said most of the injuries were minor and that 108 of the wounded troops have already returned to duty after receiving treatment.
The injuries occurred during the first 10–11 days of fighting, which began February 28, 2026, when U.S. and Israeli forces launched large-scale strikes on Iranian military targets, triggering retaliatory missile and drone attacks across the Middle East.
Iranian Missile and Drone Attacks Target U.S. Bases
According to U.S. defense officials, many of the injuries were caused by Iranian missile and drone strikes targeting American bases in the Gulf region, including installations in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Military officials said blast waves from explosions frequently cause traumatic brain injuries and concussions, even when soldiers are protected inside hardened facilities.
Defense officials confirmed that seven U.S. troops have been killed in the conflict so far, including six soldiers killed in a drone strike on a U.S. base in Kuwait and another who died after an earlier attack in Saudi Arabia.
The Pentagon said medical teams are providing advanced treatment for the eight severely wounded service members, some of whom were evacuated to specialized military hospitals.
War Enters Its Second Week
The casualty figures were released as the conflict entered its second week, with the United States continuing a large-scale air campaign against Iranian military infrastructure.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the U.S. military would intensify operations and described one day of strikes as “the most intense day of attacks inside Iran so far.”
U.S. officials say the objective of the campaign is to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities, weaken its naval forces, and prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons.
Iran, however, has vowed to continue retaliatory attacks against American forces and regional allies.
Decline in Iranian Strikes Reported
U.S. military commanders say Iranian attacks have declined sharply in recent days, following sustained American and Israeli strikes on missile launchers, weapons storage facilities, and drone sites.
However, defense analysts warn that the decrease could represent a temporary pause or tactical adjustment, rather than a permanent reduction in Iran’s military capability.
The conflict has already caused regional instability, rising oil prices, and increased military alert levels across the Middle East, with U.S. bases in several countries remaining on high alert.
Ongoing Monitoring of Troop Casualties
Pentagon officials said casualty numbers may continue to change as doctors evaluate soldiers exposed to explosions or combat stress.
Medical assessments for blast-related injuries can take days or weeks, meaning some cases may only be diagnosed after soldiers return from operational areas.
U.S. military leaders say they will continue to provide updates on casualties as the war develops.
